Fiber Internet FAQ
With fiber internet, fiber-optic cables full of tiny strands of plastic or glass transmit data in pulses of light (instead of electricity through copper lines like coax internet). It’s the fastest and most reliable internet service available in the world today. Fiber lines are laid up to your house and connected through a small optical network unit (ONU) in your home, so you don’t need a modem.
Upload speed is how fast you can send information from your computer to other devices or servers on the internet – such as sending emails, multiplayer gaming and video conferencing. Download speed is how fast data transfers to your device or computer from the internet, such as when you download files, stream Netflix and listen to music.
Symmetrical internet speeds – meaning identical download and upload speeds – means you can more easily upload large files and videos, livestream, game online and video conference without lag or buffering. They offer a lot of advantages to students, people who work from home, content creators and gamers.
Mbps stands for megabits of data per second. It’s a measurement of internet bandwidth. The higher the number of Mbps in your internet plan, the faster everything is online and the more bandwidth you have for your devices.
And if you have gigabit internet, we’re talking about gigabits per second (Gbps). One gigabit equals 1,000 megabits. Gig speeds deliver a faster experience, with capacity for all your connected devices.
No, we don’t require contracts. You can cancel at any time.
No, we won’t cap your data or throttle your speeds. You enjoy unlimited data at the speeds in whatever package you choose.
With fiber internet, a small optical network unit (ONU) will be installed in your home and is included in your package. If you’d like a Wi-Fi signal, you can purchase or lease a wireless router from Midco to connect via Ethernet cable to create your wireless network.
Currently, approved Midco routers can achieve speeds available with Midco Fiber Internet up to 1 Gbps. If choosing the 2 Gbps or 5 Gbps internet package, customer must purchase their own retail modem separately.
