Midcontinent to Build Additional Network Redundancy in Western North Dakota

December 3, 2014 - Sioux Falls, SD: To support the needs of a growing population in western North Dakota, Midcontinent Communications will invest $5 million dollars to build an extension of its Northern Plains Network from Williston to Bismarck. As an extension of the current fiber run from Minot to Williston, the added 100 miles of fiber will provide network redundancy in an area where construction and digging have periodically resulted in service outages to local residents and businesses.

“We’ll create a fiber ring that connects Williston, Bismarck and Minot, and reduce the chance of an outage should a fiber cut occur,” said Tom Simmons, senior vice president of public policy. “In the meantime, Midcontinent will continue to take extraordinary measures to ensure contractors know the precise location of our fiber, so we can provide reliable service to customers in western North Dakota.”

Construction on the Northern Plains Network fiber extension begins in early 2015.
