Gratitude for Channel 6 and New Beginnings for Midco

Lawrence, KS: After a storied 45-year run, Channel 6 will sign off the air after its 6 pm newscast on Friday, August 4. Many journalists and personalities contributed to Channel 6’s local newscasts and programming over the years, and Midco is grateful for the talent, perseverance and integrity they brought to storytelling and the local community.

Meantime, Midco is excited to launch Midco Sports Network® to the Lawrence service area. Kevin Romary – who spent 20 years at Channel 6 – will be the face of MidcoSN in Kansas. Romary’s signature voice and passion for sports have been staples in eastern Kansas for years. Romary has covered four Final Four Championships and three bowl games. He’s also witnessed more individual and team state titles than he can count.

"I've been a part of the Lawrence community for more than 20 years, and I can't imagine a place more deserving of its own sports network,” said Romary. “The athletes and fans are among the most passionate in the country. I'm excited to be a part of this new endeavor."

MidcoSN® in Kansas will begin in early November. From now until then, Midco is making a significant investment to update the studio and provide high-definition video. A new audio board, cameras, lights and set will be installed. Starting in September, MidcoSN in Kansas will produce live prep football games on channel 32 in standard definition and 232 in high definition.

As part of Midco’s investment in Kansas, the communications company has signed a lease on a new Customer Experience Center facility and staff offices in Lawrence. The Customer Experience Center will be located at Broadway Plaza II (at the cross-section of 31st and Iowa). Midco has been updating Customer Experience Centers throughout its footprint, with Sioux Falls, SD; Fargo, ND; Rapid City, SD, completed earlier this year and the Bismarck, ND, facility scheduled for completion in the next month.

The new facilities are designed for a more engaging, hands-on experience for customers, improved check-in and checkout processes and more demonstration areas. Midco’s goal is to have the new Lawrence facility open prior to the end of the year. The agreement is a five-year lease with extension opportunities through 15 years.

In addition to launching MidcoSN in Kansas and opening a new Customer Experience Center in Lawrence, Midco will roll out its Sports & Variety video package to Kansas customers on August 8. The package will include CBS Sports Network on channel 148, NFL RedZone on channel 158 in SD and channel 229 in HD, the Sportsman Channel on channel 152, TVG Network on channel 145 and GOL TV on channel 144.
