April 22, 2026 – Sioux Falls, SD: Today, Midco is excited to announce a $43 million investment that will complete its multi-year Fiber Forward initiative to transform its first-in-class network in South Dakota. 

“In 2021, we launched our Fiber Forward commitment to bring next generation fiber connectivity to more than 300,000 homes and businesses across South Dakota,” said Midco President and Chief Operating Officer Ben Dold. “Today, we are thrilled to preview the next phase of our network evolution in the state. This $43 million investment in fiber network upgrades will bring blazing fast symmetrical speeds, low latency, unmatched reliability and rock-solid security to more homes and businesses across South Dakota.”  

Transforming Connectivity in South Dakota 

Next-generation fiber upgrades have already been delivered to 100,000 homes and businesses in South Dakota, including 52,500 homes and businesses in the Sioux Falls area and 23,000 homes and businesses in the Rapid City area. Midco’s 2026-2028 investment will fund 4 gigabits per second (Gbps) download / 1 Gbps upload internet speeds across the state and bring Midco’s total Fiber Forward investment in South Dakota to more than $160 million. Planned upgrades will deliver: 

• Faster, more reliable internet speeds to support work-from-home, distance learning, telehealth and advanced cloud applications. 
• Increased network capacity to keep pace with rapid population growth and business expansion in the region. 
• Enhanced service for local organizations, including schools, hospitals and public safety agencies that increasingly depend on strong digital infrastructure. 
• A futureproof fiber network designed to support multigigabit speeds and emerging technologies such as smart city applications and next generation wireless services. 

“Midco has the most reliable internet speeds in South Dakota according to Ookla® Speedtest® data analysis¹, and this South Dakota network investment will continue to bring our fiber internet speeds and customer experience to the next level,” Dold said.  

Strengthening Enduring Partnerships 

“Investments in high-speed broadband strengthen South Dakota’s economy by supporting business growth, innovation and quality of life," said Governor’s Office of Economic Development Commissioner Bill Even. “Midco’s continued commitment ensures communities have the reliable infrastructure needed to compete and grow.” 

City leaders across the state also celebrated Midco’s continued investment in South Dakota connectivity.  

“Midco has long been a valued corporate partner to Sioux Falls, and its continued commitment to expanding next-generation connectivity strengthens the foundation on which our community grows and thrives,” said Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken. “The Fiber Forward initiative plays a critical role in supporting the industries that drive our region, from health care and finance to education, manufacturing and technology. This investment helps ensure Sioux Falls remains competitive, resilient and well-positioned for future opportunities.”  

“I’m pleased to see Midco’s continued investment in the Rapid City region through the Fiber Forward initiative,” said Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun. “This next phase builds on five years of strong progress, with upgrades already reaching 23,000 homes and businesses in Rapid City. It’s another step forward in supporting our city’s growth and bright future. I applaud Midco for their vision and commitment to our community.” 

As part of its commitment to South Dakota customers, Midco will continue to invest in the community through its Foundation grants, free nonprofit public service announcements, sponsorships and community event support. 

“Fulfilling Midco’s Fiber Forward vision is as much about community partnership as it is technological innovation,” said Midco Senior Community Relations Manager and Foundation Executive Director Rhonda Erickson. “The Midco Foundation awarded $144,000 in nonprofit support after our last board meeting, including 31 grants to incredibly deserving South Dakota organizations.
