What is Wi-Fi 7? 

Wi-Fi 7 is the newest generation of Wi-Fi technology, designed to deliver faster speeds, lower latency and more reliable connections than previous generations. 

For Midco customers, that means a better experience on the devices you use every day. 

"We're seeing that customers have more and more devices connected to their network. Wi-Fi 7 is better at handling all those connections and giving a smoother experience for customers," Product Analyst Ethan McDonald said. 

Whether you’re streaming in one room, gaming in another or using smart devices at home, Wi-Fi 7 handles it better. 

 

Wi-Fi 7 Speed Explained 

Wi-Fi 7 is designed to significantly increase wireless speed performance compared to previous generations. 

"It builds on the previous generation by supporting faster speeds and lower latency. It has improved performance for those busy households," McDonald said. 

Internet speed determines how much data can come into your home, while Wi-Fi helps deliver that connection to all the devices on your network. 

When evaluating internet performance, it's important to understand the difference between download and upload speeds. Download speeds affect activities like streaming movies, browsing websites and downloading files, while upload speeds impact activities like video calls, sharing photos and backing up files to the cloud. 

Wi-Fi 7 helps your devices make better use of those speeds for a smoother online experience throughout your home. 

 

Wi-Fi 7 vs. Wi-Fi 6 

Many customers currently use Wi-Fi 6 equipment. While Wi-Fi 6 is still a strong wireless technology, WiFi 7 adds upgrades for today’s more connected homes. 

Key differences between Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7: 

• Faster wireless speeds
• Lower latency
• More capacity for connected devices
• Improved network efficiency
• Enhanced whole-home coverage 

One of the improvements customers may notice most is coverage. 

"It's much better at handling range," McDonald said. "In past generations, customers needed maybe three to four extenders depending on house size. Wi-Fi 7 can handle that much better. You might only need one device or two devices for larger households." 

 

Wi-Fi 6E vs Wi-Fi 7 

Wi-Fi 6E launched shortly after Wi-Fi 6 and introduced access to 6 GHz bandwidth. This allowed compatible devices more room to connect with less congestion. Wi-Fi 7 also uses 6 GHz but takes things further with wider channels and improved data transmission. 

 

Performance in Real-World Scenarios 

While technical features matter, what customers notice most is how their Wi-Fi performs day to day. For many households, that means fewer slowdowns, stronger coverage and better performance when multiple people are online at once. 

"Latency is a big one for gamers,” McDonald said. “Coverage is a big thing for families who have kids streaming and parents streaming. Handling the traffic better is definitely a benefit of Wi-Fi 7." 

In short, Wi-Fi 7 keeps connections fast and responsive, even when the whole family is online. 

 

Who can get Wi-Fi 7 at Midco? 

New Midco Home customers who sign up for 1 Gig internet or faster will receive Wi-Fi 7 equipment automatically. Existing 1 Gig customers are also eligible to switch to Wi-Fi 7 equipment. Customers with internet plans below Gig speeds can add Wi-Fi 7 for a monthly fee.  

New Midco Business internet customers will receive Wi-Fi 7 with any speed package, and existing customers are welcome to call and upgrade. 

Upgrading is simple and does not require construction or major installation. 

“It's just switching out the existing extender, so there's no actual work that needs to be done underground or anything like that,” McDonald said.  

For Midco, Wi-Fi 7 is another step in delivering the best possible internet experience, from the connection coming into your home to the Wi-Fi that powers your everyday devices. 

“We've always had really good speeds, but now thanks to Wi-Fi 7, it’s the complete package,” McDonald said.
