Extender Troubleshooting

If you have received a notification that your extenders are placed too far apart, simply move them closer together to help improve your network’s performance.

We recommend placing extenders about 15-20 feet apart for optimal performance. Extenders typically can be placed 30-40 feet apart. Note that if you have particularly thick walls (brick, concrete or large amounts of metal) or furniture blocking an extender, you may need to reduce these distances.

After rearranging your extender(s), your network should begin to optimize and establish improved connections. Optimizations may take a few minutes to complete.

Once finished, you can check your Midco Wi-Fi app to see if your extender's health has improved. You can also try running an in-app speed test from your device to see the latest results.

If you received this notification, but haven’t noticed any issues with performance, you may not need to take any action. Many devices, especially Wi-Fi-enabled devices such as thermostats, smart plugs and lights, don’t require much bandwidth to operate.

If your internet connection drops, here are some recommended troubleshooting tips:

  • Verify that your device is connected to your Midco Wi-Fi network by going to your device Wi-Fi connection settings.
  • Check to see if you can connect to other websites. Open your device browser and go to any website, such as Midco.com. If you can access that site, there must be something wrong with the previous site or app that you were trying to access.
  • If you are unable to visit any website with your device, try to access the internet with another device, your computer or tablet. If you can connect other devices to the Wi-Fi network, restart your device and try to connect to the Wi-Fi network. If you are still unable to connect your device to the network, contact us for help.
  • If you are unable to connect all devices to the internet via Wi-Fi connection, connect your computer directly to the extender via Ethernet. You may need to troubleshoot your modem, ONU or PoE adapter connectivity.
  • If you can connect your computer to the internet via Ethernet, verify that your extender is working by following the "Single or few extenders offline" steps below.

There are many possible reasons why one or more of your extenders would appear disconnected or offline.

Your entire network is offline.

  1. Unplug the modem, ONU or PoE adapter from power.
  2. After 30 seconds, reconnect the modem, ONU or PoE adapter.
  3. Unplug any extenders from power for 30 seconds each, then plug them back in.
  4. Wait until the modem, ONU or adapter is fully restarted and its lights indicate that there is an internet connection. It may take at least two minutes for an extender's LED to stop blinking.

A single or few extenders are not connecting.
The extender may be unplugged or not receiving any power. Check if the outlet has power by plugging in another extender or appliance to confirm the outlet is working. Confirm your extender(s) are plugged into power outlets that are always on and not controlled by switches.

When extender(s) are first plugged in, the LED should turn on solid briefly and then start to slowly pulse as it connects to the cloud. Once connected, the LED will turn off.

If the outlet works and the extender's LED does not come on when it is first plugged in or remains solid red, there may be something wrong with the extender. Please contact Midco support.

The extender is too far away from another connected extender.

  • When offline, the LED will slowly pulse as it tries to connect to the cloud. It will continue to do so if it cannot connect:
Try moving the extender closer to another one or in the same location as a known working extender while it connects. Once connected, the LED will turn off.
  • Use the extender health indicator on the Midco Wi-Fi app to check the signal quality and place the extender in a closer location. If this is closer than you had anticipated, you may need to add an additional extender for optimal connectivity.

The extender is unplugged or is not receiving any power.

  1. Check if the outlet has power by plugging in another extender or any other appliance to confirm. When extenders are first plugged in, the LED should always turn on solid briefly and then start to slowly pulse as it is trying to connect to the cloud. Once connected it will then turn off.
  2. If the outlet is connected to a light switch, make sure the switch is on.
  3. If the outlet is OK and the extender's LED does not come on at all when it is first plugged in, this indicates there is likely something wrong it. Please contact us.

The extender is too far away from any other connected extender.

  1. When offline, the LED will slowly pulse as it tries to connect to the cloud and will continue to do so if it cannot connect.
  2. Move the extender closer to another extender or in the same location as a known working extender. It should connect, and the LED will turn off.
  3. Use the extender health indicator to check signal quality. Poor signal is often a reason for extenders intermittently going offline.
  4. If it is a range issue, contact us to add another extender to your Midco Wi-Fi network.

If there is no reason the extender cannot connect by wireless to another extender, it may be defective. Please contact us to confirm and if needed, process a replacement.
