See what TiVo Experience you have
TiVo Home Screen
The Home screen is available if you have the newer TiVo Experience. To get to the Home screen from live TV or any TiVo screen, press the TiVo button on your remote control.
To view and select options on the Home screen:
- Use the left arrow and right arrow buttons on your remote control to get to menu items.
- Press Select to choose the one you want.
- Use the Back button (or the Zoom button on remotes without a Back button) to go back to the previous screen.
Menu items include:
- The Menu icon – the three horizontal lines to the left of My Shows – takes you to the Manage, Settings and Help menus.
- My Shows takes you to your recorded and streaming videos.
- What to Watch lets you browse shows available for you, organized by popular categories.
- Apps takes you to streaming and music apps you have connected to your TiVo system.
- Search lets you find shows by title, actor name or keyword – across TV and your connected apps.
You can add up to four of your own shortcuts to the menu.
- While on the Home screen, press the A button on your remote control.
- On the right, you’ll see available shortcut numbers for your Menu. Highlight the app you want to add to the Menu, and press the number on your remote.
- For example, if you want to set Hulu as shortcut number 6, highlight Hulu in the list of apps, and press 6 on your remote.
- The new shortcut will appear on the Home screen.
The Settings menu lets you manage your recordings and TiVo® OnePass™ searches, including customizing your recording settings, OnePass priorities, parental control settings and user preferences. (Note: Some settings are only available on TiVo DVRs, not TiVo® Minis.)
Newer TiVo Experience
- Press the TiVo button on your remote to access the TiVo Home screen.
- Choose the Menu icon (three horizontal bars) to the left of My Shows, and then select Settings.
Classic TiVo Experience

The SmartBar is available if you have the newer TiVo Experience. If you’re using the classic TiVo Experience, refer to the Discovery Bar section on this page. See what TiVo Experience you have.
The SmartBar predicts shows that you’ll want to watch based on what you usually watch at a particular time or day. For example, if you normally watch yesterday’s late-night talk show the next morning, you’ll see it in the SmartBar when you wake up.
To use the SmartBar:
- Press the TiVo button on your remote to access the TiVo Home screen.
- Use the down arrow on your remote to move to the SmartBar.
- Use the right and left arrow buttons on your remote to scroll through the SmartBar.
- Highlight your preferred show, and press OK.
- When the Episode or Movie screen appears, you can watch the show, view the cast, see other episodes, get recommendations for other shows or modify recording options.
The Video Window and Background are available if you have the newer TiVo Experience. If you’re using the classic TiVo Experience, refer to the Discovery Bar section on this page. See what TiVo Experience you have.
When you press the TiVo button to go to the Home screen, the show or movie you were watching will continue to play in the background by default. Similarly, on most TiVo menu screens, a video window located in the upper-right corner plays the current video as well.
You can control these background videos with your remote.
- Press Pause on your remote to pause the video in the background, and press Pause again to resume playing.
- Press the Slow button to temporarily hide the background video. To unhide it, press the Slow button again.
- Press Exit to watch the video in full screen.
To turn off the background video completely:
- From the TiVo Home screen, select the Menu icon.
- Select Settings, User Preferences and then Video Window.
- Set Display Video Window to No.
TiVo Central
TiVo Central is available if you have the classic TiVo Experience. If you’re using the newer TiVo Experience, refer to the TiVo Home Screen section on this page. See what TiVo Experience you have.
From TiVo Central screen, you can manage your recordings, find new shows to watch, access connected apps and more.
- To get to the TiVo Central screen from live TV or from any TiVo screen, press the TiVo button on your remote control.
The Discovery Bar Video is available if you have the classic TiVo Experience. If you’re using the newer TiVo Experience, refer to the Video Window and Background section on this page. See what TiVo Experience you have.
The Discovery Bar is the bar of thumbnail images across the top of most TiVo menu screens. It displays shows customized to you and your viewing habits! Often, the Discovery Bar displays ideas for shows you might like based on the shows you record and mark as favorites. It also displays other great viewing options, such as popular shows, live sports events, items from your My Shows list, TiVo suggestions and more.
Access the Discovery Bar
- From any TiVo screen with the Discovery Bar visible, press the up arrow button on your remote to move up to the Discovery Bar, highlighting one of the shows.
- The section will expand, explaining why the highlighted show was recommended for you. Use the left and right arrow buttons to scroll through your options.
- To exit the Discovery Bar at any time, press the down arrow.
- Highlight a show or movie that interests you, and choose Select to see more information about it.
- From this screen, you can record the show, set up a OnePass, view upcoming episodes, learn more about cast members and more.
