The Social Scam Filter

Not all contests are scams, but if you’ve “been randomly selected” for a prize without entering, you might want to do a little more digging.

Can you independently research the account that’s contacted you? Do this carefully without clicking on any links they’ve provided. A quick online search of the account name and the word "scam” could tell you in a couple seconds whether this is a legit giveaway or something else.

When Midco does a contest on social, it will always come from one of our official accounts, Midco or Midco Sports. If you want to be extra sure, which never hurts, you could even reach out to the toll-free Midco number. We try to keep all our customer service team members in the loop when there is a contest going on.

Are they asking for payment of some kind?

🚩 🚩 🚩

You should never need to send money to claim a prize. A popular scam now involves asking for gift card numbers as payment.

Midco will never ask you for a donation or payment of any type to win a contest or giveaway. While we do have team members who might reach out about an overdue bill, it will never be over social media.

Are they asking for your banking or account info?

🚩 🚩 🚩

That is a big red flag. Never share your banking info over social media. They might promise a deposit in your account, but it more than likely it will end with a depletion of your hard-earned money.

If we do a giveaway at Midco for something like an account credit, we will already have your Midco account information and would not need you to confirm it – especially over social media.

Red flag bonus round!

🚩 Misspellings: Are things misspelled or grammatically incorrect? It could be a sign of a scam.

🚩 Urgency: Are they creating a false sense of urgency? Scams are built to make you panic.

🚩 Too Good: Does it sound too good to be true? Chances are it is. Listen to your gut or even ask a friend to check it out for you.

Add another layer of protection.
