Internet for Apartments Made Easy: A Renter’s Guide to Selecting a Provider

You already know renting can have many complicated, moving parts. Not only are you looking for a safe place to call home, you’re also considering all the amenities you’ll want and need to fit your lifestyle, family and your job, especially if you’re a remote worker. Follow this easy guide to help with the selection of the internet provider that works best for your apartment, budget and lifestyle.

Step 1: Know the Equipment Basics

Just because we use the internet every day, doesn’t mean we know how it works. Having this basic understanding will help you as you search for rental properties and an internet service provider, or ISP.

There are a few pieces of necessary equipment to have in order for your internet to work. Some rental properties offer pre-installed equipment options in each unit, so it can help to know the difference between what's included.

  • Modem: The box connecting your home network to your internet service provider.1
  • Router: A piece of equipment linking all your wired and wireless devices to an internet connection at once - allowing them to route data between each other directly.1 A router is what makes Wi-Fi available in your unit.
  • Gateway: A single piece of equipment serving as both a modem and a router.
  • Optical network unit (ONU): Equipment that provides an Ethernet connection from a fiber-based connection.

The equipment you’ll need to connect to the internet will depend on your apartment, the internet service provider and the type of internet service they offer. Be sure to verify which pieces are included by the provider vs. which ones you are responsible for purchasing or renting. They may also have a list of approved equipment that works best with their network so make sure to check for that as well.

Step 2: Know Common Types of Internet

These dictate the speed, cost and reliability of the internet to your apartment building. Internet service is not a one size fits all approach as each service can vary greatly based on location or proximity to towers. Two of the major options available for apartment units include fiber and coaxial cable.

Keep in mind, regardless of what type of internet is provided, the ultimate goal is to have an internet connection available. If the apartment building you’re interested in has either of the options below, you’ll be able to enjoy the benefits of streaming, gaming and entertaining.

Fiber

If fiber-optic is offered at your apartment, you’ll have fast, secure and reliable internet.2 With fiber installation, the lines are laid up to the apartment and may even be connected through a ONU or gateway in your unit, eliminating the need for a modem.

Coaxial Cable

Cable is the most common type of internet for apartments and for most areas today. Using copper coaxial cable, download speeds are similar to fiber, but upload speeds can be lower depending on your provider.2 If you have specific download and upload speed requirements for any reason, be sure to share with the property manager to find out if the building is wired with fiber.

Step 3: Know Your Speeds

We all have a need for speed. And depending on what type of work, activity or entertainment you’ll be using your internet for, it can dictate the speed you’ll need to get the most out of your internet connection. Here are a few important terms to understand before picking your internet speed.

  • Bandwidth: This is known as your internet speed. It’s measured in megabits per second (Mbps) or gigabits per second (Gbps). Bandwidth is the measurement of how much data travels to your home per second.
  • Download speed: How long it will take to receive data or files. An example is streaming.
  • Upload speed: How long it will take to send data or files. An example is video conferencing.

The speed you’ll need will vary depending on if you’re streaming, working from home, gaming or enjoying a night at home with the family. Knowing the download/upload speeds of the provider and the speed you need to work, live and play can contribute to the provider and services you pick. Another important factor to consider is how many devices you really have as they can potentially pull some of bandwidth, even if you aren’t actively using a device.

Step 4: Ask the Right Questions

Does the property have an ISP?

Ask if the property provides internet service as an amenity and if so, is it done through one specific internet service provider, or ISP.

If this is the case, the owner has an agreement with a provider to offer internet service to all its tenants. This type of setup can include each unit having its own equipment pre-installed. All a tenant has to do is follow the specific internet provider’s sign-up process, which may differ depending on the building. It will likely include account creation, selection of desired users or features and payment (if it’s not included with your monthly rent already). Within minutes, your connection is activated, and you have internet access.

If your property does not have an agreement with an ISP, you’ll need to do some research about the providers available in your area.

What other internet service providers are available if my property doesn’t have an ISP?

The quickest way to learn about other available providers is to ask the property manager and/or other tenants. A simple search will also provide you with a list of possible telecommunication providers in your area. This varies from city and state so make sure you check where they’re located relative to your apartment building.

Speed, cost and reliability rely heavily on service and location. Ask for any special rates or first-time customer deals they may offer.
