5 Tips for Your TiVo Experience

4 minute read

A TiVo® DVR is more than just a set-top box that also records live TV. With a number of features that make your TV-watching better – from recommendations for new shows based on the shows you currently watch to pausing a show in one room and continuing it in another using a TiVo® Mini – there’s a lot you can do with the TiVo® Experience.

Here are a few tips for getting the most out of your TiVo® system.

Link Your Streaming Apps

Get more from a single search by connecting the streaming apps you subscribe to – like Netflix, Hulu, SHOWTIME ANYTIME®, Prime Video and more – to your TiVo DVR. And check out the free apps available directly through your TiVo, such as Tubi, YouTube Kids and Ameba.

After you’ve connected the apps, when you search for a specific show or actor, your TiVo system will search across select streaming apps, as well as live TV and your recordings. It’s the easiest way to find what you want to watch.

Set Up OnePass Recordings

TiVo OnePass™ gathers every episode of your favorite series, every game or match from a specific team, or every sporting event in a league and adds them to your My Shows list – so you can watch them on your own time. It’s an easy way to make sure you never miss an episode of your favorite show.

Even better, if you connect your streaming apps, OnePass also searches for episodes across Netflix, Hulu and more – so you have more choices, without taking up more space on your DVR.

Take Advantage of Suggestions

When you’ve exhausted all the episodes of your favorite series, check out your TiVo Suggestions. Your TiVo DVR will find shows that are similar to what you watch regularly and automatically records them (when your DVR has space).

The more you watch TV – and the more you rate programming using the Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down buttons on your remote – the smarter your TiVo DVR becomes at finding shows you’ll like. You can find these suggestions as a filter in your My Shows list, so when you’re in the mood for something new, you can easily find a new favorite.

Explore Ratings Before Watching

You can use Thuuz and Metacritic ratings to help decide whether to check out a movie that's on or tune in to a sports game. Thuuz ratings score sporting events from 0-100, with 100 being the best. The ratings come out before the game and also get updated as play progresses. So if it’s a nail-biter or a blow out, you’ll be able to know if you should tune in. Metacritic ratings color code movies based on available reviews to let you know what to watch and what to skip.

Tell Your TiVo DVR What You Want

Voice control has made using your TiVo system even better. Just press the blue microphone on the TiVo voice remote and speak naturally, telling your TiVo DVR to change the channel, pause a show, launch an app or search for a movie. You can even use your voice to rewind or fast forward a show a specific amount of time – “Rewind 30 seconds” or “Fast forward three minutes” or “Jump back to the beginning.”
